Frequently Asked Questions:

What Is Macramé?

Macramé is a craft using creative knotting techniques to make decorative textiles and accessories from macramé cord (also called rope or yarn). It is a technique that has developed over centuries, dating back to Babylonian times when fringe plaiting was first recorded on period clothing. Arabian weavers in the 13th century started to integrate decorative knots into woven fabrics, making the practice much more popular and prevalent. Later, the technique spilled into Europe and became a fashionable trend in England during the 17th century. Macramé became hugely popular in the late 1800s, being used across clothing as well as home furnishings. A century later, the hippie movement brought macramé to the fore yet again as a fitting look for their homespun, more natural & relaxed aesthetics. Today macramé is as popular as its ever been – partly due to a renewed interest in crafting as well as a plethora of blogs and online tutorials making the craft even more accessible & inspirational.

Is Macramé Easy To Learn?

If you're new to macramé - welcome! This is a brilliant craft for beginners and experienced crafters and makers alike. Macramé isn't an intimidating craft by any means for newbies – you can start with quick, small projects to learn some key techniques then, when you're ready, begin to explore more complex & elaborate knots and projects! Also, macramé is incredibly affordable to do! You just need a few low-cost tools and supplies to get started. Keen to find out more? Head over to our 'beginner's guide to macramé' to learn how to get started.

What Do I Need To Do Macramé?

Getting started with macramé couldn't be easier! If you're new to the craft, we recommend reading our 'beginner's guide to macramé' to follow our simple steps to starting your own project.

Now for the fun part! Decide on your macramé project – you might want to choose something fairly quick like a coaster or more elaborate, like a wall hanging or cushion cover. Once you've decided on your project, head to our macramé range to select the right size cord for your piece. Here's a quick guide to help you –

  • Small projects: Choose a 1.5 – 3mm cord for small scale & delicate projects such as jewellery, coasters, Christmas tree decorations and purses.
  • Medium size projects: A 3 – 5mm cord will be ideal for medium size projects such as planters, small wall hangings and shopping bags.
  • Large scale projects: 4 – 7mm cord will suit large scale pieces like bigger wall hangings and backdrops.

In addition to your cord, you just need a few simple tools to help your project run smoothly. We recommend securing your piece to a macramé board with T pins, as you work to help you knot neatly and keep your work tidy. A tape measure is essential for accurately measuring your cords, as is a good sharp pair of scissors to neatly trim ends and fringes. If your project calls for accessories such as macramé rings, beads and dowels, you can find a great range in our macramé collection. Otherwise you could use our fantastic 39 piece macramé accessory kit, which will have plenty of pieces to help and inspire your project.
